Cotton Bags

Supose bags of cotton and iron bars both with mass 100kg are taken.Which will have more weight and why?

Please remeber the difference between mass and weight while answering this question.

  1. They will both have the same weight. it's just like the feathers and bricks thing isn't it?
  2. same. both have same mass and same pull from gravity therefore the same weight.
  3. same weight but bags of cotton are easier to carry since the mass is greatly distributed where as iron is condense
  4. both the same.. 100 kg
  5. same weight since both of them will be accelerated towards earth with the same acceleration.
  6. See, since u have said that both their masses are same, then if they subjected to equal g (acceleration due to gravity) then weights will also be same. If not, then since W=mg, then the ratio of their wts= ratio of their 'g' s. I think that is it. - Harsh
  7. The both (cotton and iron bars) will have equal weight beacuse both are of same mass e.g. 100kg.
  8. both will have smae weight untill there will be diff in gravitational pull exerted by the earth on them,
  9. Both will weigh the same in a vacuum, but the cotton will displace about 20 grams more air. Weighing in air, due to buoyancy, the cotton will weigh 99.9977 kg and the iron will weight 99.9997 kg. Note that the space between fibers is not counted when measuring the density of cotton.
  10. as weight = mass * g as mass is equal and g is a constant weight will be same
