Cotton Bags

Why do people use paper bags for holding takeout coffee cups?

I notice in TV shows, such as the Sopranos and Law& Order that when people buy a few cups of coffee (paper or styrofoam cups), they are often carrying them in paper bags. Is this common? Why? Where I'm from fast food and coffee chains use cardboard drink trays. I'm sure paper bags are eco conscious, but wouldn't they be unstable? Especially if liquid is spilled on them. Thanks!

  1. If the cups were a tight fit inside the paper bag, then it would be okay as long as you were careful with your placement of the coffee on your way to your destination. Usually when coffee is packaged this way, the lids are solid or the hole is covered with tape or one of those decorative hole cover stickers. The coffee shouldn't spill if the lids are on securely and the coffee is handled with care. The paper bag holds the heat of the coffee in better than a cardboard tray. The paper bag is also cheaper and more eco-friendly than a tray.
  2. They are jealous of the swanky way winos look. Actually, I agree with Salmah.
